Fort Lauderdale’s history and culture at a glance
Before the 20th century, the area occupied by present-day Fort Lauderdale was known as the “New River Settlement.”
The city of Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of Second Seminole War stockades constructed along the banks of New River 1838. The forts themselves were named in honor of Major William Lauderdale, a planter-soldier who led a company of Tennessee Volunteers along Florida’s east coast to capture agricultural lands.
The Fort Lauderdale stockade was the site of several skirmishes during the Second Seminole War, and was abandoned at the end of the war in 1842.
Fort Lauderdale was officially incorporated as a city in 1911, and was designated county seat of Broward County in 1915.
The Florida land boom during the 1920s triggered the first major development in Fort Lauderdale.
During World War II, Fort Lauderdale was used as a major U.S base. A Naval Air Station was built as a training center for pilots, fire control operators, and radar operators. A Coast Guard base was also constructed at Port Everglades.
• After World War II ended, a large number of service members returned to Fort Lauderdale, causing a significant increase in population. The 1960 Census recorded more than 83,000 people in the city, which showed a 230% increase compared to the 1950 record.
• Growth in the Fort Lauderdale area shifted to surrounding suburbs and nearby cities after the city was essentially built out in the 1970s.
• Fort Lauderdale is a premier yachting center that’s home to over a hundred marinas and more than 50,000 registered yachts. The city also hosts the annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the largest boating event in the world.
